5 Good Writing Habits

P. Barrera

Sorry about the hiatus. Infinity Flower Publishing is proud to announce that we are back, with more info than ever before!

With NaNoWriMo upon us, I'd like to talk today about 5 good writing habits.

1. Write at the same time every day.

Consistency is key with honing any craft. The same is true with writing. If you want to produce any amount of words in a succinct period of time, you need to make your writing a habit. To do this, set aside time every day at the same time of day, to do your writing.

2. Don't second-guess yourself.

Save the re-reading and changes for the edit. Write your first draft and let it sit for a few weeks before returning to it. When you start it, be sure to have a clean mind. This will make any rewrites you do much easier and any mistakes easier to see.

3. Set reasonable goals.

Write as much or as little as you like, but remember to do what you can. Set goals, but don't set goals so lofty that you can't reach them without a cherry-picker!

4. Don't compare yourself to others.

Everyone writes differently. Everyone has different speeds and different work ethics. Don't compare yourself to anyone and know that what you're doing is important. When your story is done, you will know. (And stay away from the nay-sayers!)

5. Back it up and then back it up again!

This one seems pretty self-explanatory. Save your work to your computer, save it to the cloud, save it on an external drive. Whatever you do, make sure you have multiple back-ups. You can never be too safe!
